Good evening, fellow Demsasheads! Rising superstar, Jerusalem continues her meteoric rise with another incredible article. I appreciate how every time I read one of Jerusalem's articles, I come away with something that contradicts how I see the world. This time, it was the polling on immigration. It's hard to understand how the polling can be so positive for immigration when many narratives seem down on it.
Excellent article! I absolutely agree that developed nations can and should let immigrants and asylum seekers work right away, with no waiting period, as worked out so well when the Biden Administration welcomed Ukrainians.
Yes, those awaiting hearings should be able to work but they should also know that when that hearing is held, the are likely to be deported. "Asylum seeking" should not be a "Get a Work Permit Free" card.
Ukraine is a different issue. There we are allowing refugees as a way of supporting the Government's war effort.
Thank you, Jerusalem, for sharing these thoughts during the final days of the Biden Administration. Interestingly, Jimmy Carter may have been the last President before TACO to effectively lead public opinion on important issues. Immigration is important, and with time, attitudes are changing after the reactive stories about ICE raids fade and new stories emerge about large networks of fraud and crime slowly being exposed. Even MSM has alluded to hidden knowledge within communities, now even the local ABC affiliate in Los Angeles is reporting on them.
The Administration cannot control the number of people who show up seeking asylum, but it could at least get caught trying. Even if it cannot process ALL the claims, it could process some of them and deport those w/o valid claims and publicize that this is a risk the seeker runs. And how much effort has gone into informing potential asylum seekers the very narrow ground for asylum. Make sure that those who are denied entry did not just make a good faith mistake abut what "asylum" is.
